If you thought that leftist censorship and discrmination was bad at American universities, wait till you get a load of this….

Posted by iusbvision on July 31, 2008

Readers of this blog are well aware that exposing and fighting censorship has been the most important part of our mission here at the Vision.

Rory Leishman of the London Free Press tells about how Canada’s universities have become bastions of censorship, oppression and discrimination. Now some radical leftist groups are trying to deny students with ‘unapproved’ views and religions access to state run university facilities. (Hat Tip FIRE)

In America the far left tries to veil its censorship by calling it a ‘fairness doctrine’ or ‘harassment’, or ‘speech codes’. In Canada the far left openly proclaims censorship, oppression and discrimination as a virtue.

Read on:

Academic freedom used to be a hallmark of the Canadian university system. Apart from a few fascists, communists and other cranks on campus, everyone recognized that the free and vigorous expression of controversial ideas is essential to the life of the mind and the pursuit of truth.

Today, academic freedom is under attack as never before. On all too many campuses, freedom of expression is trumped by the contemporary canons of political correctness.

Consider, for example, the suppression of debate on abortion and the sanctity of human life. Earlier this year, the Canadian Federation of Students, an organization that purports to represent more than half a million students at more than 80 universities and colleges across Canada, expressed support for students’ unions that “refuse to allow anti-choice organizations access to their resources and space.”

In conformity with this resolution, a growing number of students’ unions from Memorial University in Newfoundland to the University of British Columbia, Okanagan, have barred pro-life student organizations from using student facilities. In defending the adoption of this policy at York University, Gilary Massa, vice-president for equity of the York Federation of Students, explained that students will still be allowed to discuss abortion in student space, provided they do so “within a pro-choice realm.”

Massa sees no room for the discussion of abortion from a pro-life perspective. “These pro-life, these anti-choice groups, they’re sexist in nature,” she insists. “The way that they speak about women who decide to have abortions is demoralizing . . . Is this an issue of free speech? No, this is an issue of women’s rights.”

That’s typical of campus censors: They are very sure that they have an infallible grasp of the truth.

Why do you windbags keep quoting an even worse windbag… especially one that doesn’t even understand how the university system works?! The censors on campus are overwhelmingly the university administrators, not the students (unless of course student leaders side with the administration, rather than represent their members’ interests)! Moreover, the CFS policy in question is not about censorship. The policy isn’t a gag-order against anti-choice groups, it merely denies them access to resources which are typically already abundant. Do you think you’d be so high and mighty and not deny pro-choicers space and money if you had your way? I doubt it.

Yeah, sure anti-choicers express themselves vigorously, but not always the most truthfully; and maybe you should consider the balance between freedom of expression and freedom of choice. I’d prefer to give women the choice over what to do with their bodies, than give those who would rather suppress a woman’s right to choose the voice to blather on about what they think is(n’t) right for women.

Furthermore, what makes you think the CFS is a radical organization? It’s a member-driven democratic lobby-group. I wish our parliamentary system was so “radical”…

    Blather on!

  2. Jim,

Thank you for being the poster child of exactly the mentality that free people know they have to be vigilant against in order to stay free.

You call it choice, other people with a view that is even MORE legitimate than yours call it killing an innocent little baby.

Why is their view more legitimate, because they don’t lie to themselves and claim monopoly on the truth to the point of censorship and discrimination as you do.

You dare speak to me about democracy? You don’t understand the first thing about it. History has shown us that Democracy fails when it does not respect the free speech and conscience of others. Otherwise it is two wolves and a sheep voting on what is for dinner.

The venom dripping from the tone of your message is a clear indicator of who the haters really are. One thing that I am certain of, is that I am a better man than you, because even in your swelling irrational hate, I would never advocate that you be censored or discriminated against with state or school resources; instead haters like you should be pointed at, laughed at, and mocked.

Jim, I am glad that you used your full name when you posted your hate screed because now it is cached in search engines such as Google forever. Years from now when your children Google your name they will find this post and learn what a hateful radical their father was, and what a lesser man he had become.

The last line of your hate screed told us all we need to know about you, you wish that your government advocated the hate, censorship and discrimination that you do. We have a word for government’s who behave in such a manner. That word is evil.

I have at times pointed out the Stalinist behavior of some on the left. You are merely the latest example.

Please keep posting as there are plenty of leftist haters with a lust for censorship and control who wish they could be as bold about it as you. In America, most of them are on college campuses.

PS – By the way Jim, you talk about being pro-choice. The left is not pro choice on the ownership of guns. The left is not pro-choice when it comes to school vouchers. However I am happy to see that many Canadians are becoming MORE ‘pro-choice’ about their health care.

Only lesser men seek to censor others.

    Hiya Chuck,

When my children, if I ever have any, Google my name, which I think would be ridiculous, I hope they’ll be proud that I stood up for something. And if they did Google my name, they probably won’t find anything… if ya know what I mean…

The first thing you mention is legitimacy. But unfortunately, all too many anti-choice groups lack legitimacy, because they lie far too often about too many things. Some use placards of miscarriages and try to pass them off as abortions. Luckily, in some places, people aren’t that stupid, and one such anti-choice group in one community was told to take down their placards or be cited with indecency and public deception. This is out of public response decrying the deceptive illegitimate display of lies to appeal to some evocation of emotion. The posters evoked emotions alright… probably not the kind the group expected!

Now on to democracy. Here I will only laugh at your ignorance. If you think we live in democratic societies, you need to pull the blinders from off your face!

Neither Canada nor the US are democratic… I would already call them evil [insert spooky voice here]. Furthermore, they already advocate–no!… practice–hate, censorship, and discrimination. Take for example, the ongoing oppression of blacks in America, and the indigenous populations of both Canada and America. Sounds like a big ol’ love-in there! Oh, and the islamophobia and “terror-scare”… yep, things are going REALLY well in America!

Call me a hater all you want, but you certainly can’t say you’re doing any better. I must admit though, I am a hater. I hate those who oppress others. I hate to see people suffer at the will of others. I hate to see the weak pushed around by the strong and the poor exploited by the rich. This is what I hate and I see it on this website. I also hate your willful ignorance.

And if you want to talk about “venom,” then I suggest your re-read your last three paragraphs. Then what you should do is some research on Stalinism, because you clearly lack a comprehensive understanding of what it is and who Stalin was. He would probably be quite happy with your point of view, because he also hated women being able to choose an abortion over birth.

Furthermore, you should continue with your research on leftist views of gun control and ownership. I’m assuming you’d be surprised, based on your presumptive knowledge of what “leftists” (like we’re all the same…) believe in.

Oh, and over 90% of Canadians prefer to keep the public health care system they have, which affords them PLENTY of choice in health care, and FAR better health care than in the US. I’m sorry to inform you, but we have it MUCH nicer up here. If you want, I can suggest some simple reading for you to discover the truth for yourself.

    Seething with hate,
    Jim

  4. Jim I am glad that you posted.

It is good that people can see how he goes about justifying his first post advocating the suppression of speech and conscience. In his first post he made it clear that he wanted his form of discrimination and censorship levied by his federal government.

He justifies this by calling anyone who who does not fit into his ideologically generated misperception of reality some kind of bigot.

He also uses this tactic to warn others that if you disagree with his hate rants or his desire for censorship by the state than he will wield his hate against you.

Jim, most Americans never get to meet a person who’s ideology is so strong that anything is justified, especially censorship and slander. The ends justifies the means I think Stalin would put it.

Those who have studied the issues with Canadian health care, especially when it comes to the problems with seeing specialists, know the struggles it is having; yet in Jim’s ideologically generated world, those problems do not exist.

For people like Jim, reality doesn’t even enter in to it. He has convinced himself that the ends justifies the means because he has absolute moral authority. For example, he speaks of the “oppression of blacks” in this country. They are so oppressed that a fellow named Obama is tied with John McCain in the opinion polls. The worst oppression that the most black Americans face is failing inner city schools that are in areas controlled by the Democratic Party and the far left teachers union. They fight tooth and nail to stop any effective reforms. His perception is so altered by ideology, that he cannot accept that the ones doing the oppressing are those with view that are similar to his. You cannot expect consistency or reason from someone who advocates censorship as he has.

One of the only places that Americans get to see people like Jim is if they attend a university, or hook up with a far left outfit as the Dailykos. Many Americans are unaware that such radicals exist. Many Americans are not used to people who advocate censorship and discrimination as brazenly as he has.

    I told Jim:

You dare speak to me about democracy? You don’t understand the first thing about it. History has shown us that Democracy fails when it does not respect the free speech and conscience of others. Otherwise it is two wolves and a sheep voting on what is for dinner.

A simple concept almost every American understands such as this and look at his reaction to it. It speaks volumes as to what he and those like him are all about. Thank you again Jim for reminding us exactly what it is that free people need to be vigilant against in order to stay free.

Only lesser men try to censor others.

  5. Jim Stanley said

“The ends justifies the means” was Machiavelli, idiot.

The rest of your rebuttal is tripe, especially considering the class position of most blacks, and you’re spewing non-sense about health care in Canada. No, it’s not perfect, but at least everything Canadian can expect to receive free medical care from a doctor and at a hospital without being turned away for lack of insurance or for being insured with a different “medical” organization. The real truth is that Canadians enjoy their health care system as publicly funded. Study after study after study prove it to be… just do a simple Google search. You clearly have not read any studies about Canadian health care… unfortunately for you, I have, because it’s one of the things I’ve studied at university. So… ummm… get yer facts straight.

You need to pull your head out of the sand Chuck. Seriously. I’d like to argue with you, but I have better things to do with my time, and I can rest assured that you are in a minority position in society. Luckily for the rest of us!

And of course, we know what kind of ideological position you take by your final statement. Men must be superior in your eye, and that’s why you think women should be denied a choice over what to do with their own bodies. Only lesser men think they are greater than any one else. Now we know what kind of person you are.

Tootle-loo Chuck. Be as mean and nasty as you like. It hasn’t hurt my feelings, because I’m not taking it seriously.

    Jim

  6. Jim,

Thanks for posting once again. Once again you have demonstrated my point that your reality is what your ideology wishes it to be. For example, I didn’t say that Stalin originally said “the ends justifies the means” I said that it was something that he WOULD say, as that is exactly how he practiced his terrible rule and that is exactly how the very far left operates on many college campuses, especially yours as the article above indicates.

You have made the same case, you said in your first post that you want those who disagree with you censored, you also wanted those who disagreed with you to be denied state and school run resources unless they had view approved by you. Just like Stalin. You also made it clear that you wanted your federal government to engage in the same practice…once again just like Stalin.

It is unfortunate that you declined to show the fortitude to engage me point by point, but judging by your performance so far I can’t really say that I blame you.

I found your crack about male superiority to be quite amusing. It was nothing more than another attempt to demonize me and anyone else who would dare disagree with you. Of course, rational people know that when the word ‘men’ is used in a context such as “only lesser men wish to censor others” it is a gender inclusive context that means the same thing as humanity. Labeling people, instead of engaging them intellectually, is the tactic of those who hate as opposed to reason.

The demonization of others is necessary in order to get away with censoring people and discriminating against them. It is necessary to dehumanize them, to turn them into two dimensional creatures. Demonization to censorship to open discrimination is exactly the path that leads to jailing those you demonize and eventually to justify killing them. The Nazi’s, the KKK, the Soviets all started out using the exact same tactics that Jim uses now.

Thanks again for your post and for demonstrating the mentality a free people need to be vigilant against in order to stay free.

Only lesser men need to censor others.

  7. Jim Stanley, in his comments, defends censorship and discrimination against those with whom he disagrees, and ‘justified’ it by saying that such groups he disagrees with are haters who seek to oppress. He made it clear that most any means to silence them was justified and stated that he wanted his federal government to do that and more.

As you can see in the comments, I compared his actions with those of Stalinists; those with an ends justifies the means mentality. A morality that allows you to do what ever it takes to get your way. Those who are not knowledgeable about the years of the cold war might not understand the comparison to Stalinists. I know that today’s students are not well versed in history, so perhaps the following will be helpful.

The only morality they recognize is what will further their cause, meaning they reserve unto themselves the right to commit any crime, to lie, to cheat …They don’t subscribe to our sense of morality; they don’t believe in an afterlife; they don’t believe in a God or a religion. And the only morality they recognize, therefore, is what will advance the cause of socialism. – Ronald Reagan

Lets us judge the far left, or Stalinists as I have occasionally described them, in their own words to see if Reagan and I are correct. I started to dig through Time Magazine for any quotes from Soviet leaders on “morality”

Lenin in 1920: “We repudiate all morality that proceeds from supernatural ideas or ideas that are outside class conceptions. Morality is entirely subordinate to the interests of class war. Everything is moral that is necessary for the annihilation of the old exploiting social order and for uniting the proletariat.

When are you going to stop killing people?” Lady Astor bluntly asked Joseph Stalin in 1931, when he was liquidating the kulaks (wealthy farmers) in his drive to collectivize the land. His reply: “When it is no longer necessary.

Khrushchev in 1955: “We wish to live in peace, tranquility. But if anyone believes that our smiles involve abandonment of the teaching of Marx, Engels and Lenin, he deceives himself poorly. Those who wait for that must wait until a shrimp learns to whistle.”

Brezhnev in 1968: “Our party has always warned that in the ideological field, there can be no peaceful coexistence, just as there can be no class peace between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie.”

For these people, and for the case that Jim has made, and for the actions of those such as Lillian Charleston from IUPUI and others, there is no objective truth just ideology; no standard of morality other than what their own situational ethics require at the moment. If censoring and discriminating against others, or worse, is what it takes to silence your ‘enemies’ then to them it is totally justified; just as Jim justified it in his own comments.
