Another Palin Smear Debunked: $27 Million in Earmarks the Press and Democrats Say..

Posted by iusbvision on September 13, 2008

Another Palin smear bites the dust.

Another deception from the Washinton Post, Alan Colmes, Democrats and the left wing smear machine is that Palin asked for $27 million in earmarks for Wasilla while she was Mayor. It took all of 45 minutes of research to find out that this was just not the case.

Here is what WashPost said:

ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 1 — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin employed a lobbying firm to secure almost $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of 6,700 residents while she was its mayor, according to an analysis by an independent government watchdog group.

There was $500,000 for a youth shelter, $1.9 million for a transportation hub, $900,000 for sewer repairs, and $15 million for a rail project — all intended to benefit Palin’s town, Wasilla, located about 45 miles north of Anchorage.

Lies.

While Palin did ask for some federal assiatance, the assistance she asked for was only a fraction of that $27 million number; and Palin had good cause to ask for the federal help she did ask for, which you can see in this article HERE.

The $27 million number includes regional projects by the state and feds in which Wasilla is placed in geographically. An example of one of the federal expenditures they are attributing to Mayor Palin and Wasilla’s 6,700 residents is a $15 million rail project. That project is actually a part of the Greater Anchorage Metro Area rail system project which serves a population of about 200,000 people and is a $200+ million project of the Alaska Rail Road Corporation and the Federal Transit Administration.

Jessica’s Well Blog had something to say about this:

The project is really spearheaded by the Alaska Railroad Corporation and the regional transportation group called MASCOT. Here’s one of the the ARRC’s studies. and another. In all the Alaska Rail Road Corporation is projecting they will receive close to $200 Million in funds(pg 16) for their rail projects from the Federal Government, which includes the bulk of the transportation projects with Wasilla in the name. All of the sudden Palin and Wasilla don’t seem to key to all that funding they are accused of getting.

I guess it is more shocking for the WaPo to say that Wasilla ALONE, under Palin received $20.5 Million in “transportation earmarks” instead of saying the greater Anchorage area, including Wasilla and many other communities benefited from these funds which will improve REGIONAL commuter access, support tourism, trade, commerce and national defense. Saying a town received $6.4 Million in earmarks over a decade doesn’t have the same ring.

Here is a Google Earth photo of the Greater Anchorage Metro Area:

This Excel Document, done on someones home computer, who works for a group that calls itself, “Taxpayers for Common Sense”, is what the Washington Post and the rest of the smear machine is using as its source. As you can see they are including the lands that the federal government bought for this federal project as ‘pork requested by Mayor Palin’.

Can I stop using the word deception and start calling out the WashPost as a bunch of liars yet; as they have been caught lying about Palin time and time and time again (just search the Palin Truth Squad category and you will see the Washington Post come up again and again)?

Update: After doing all this looking and looking, I found an ABC News wire article that explains the very same point I am in this post. They explain how many of those earmarks attributed to Palin had little to nothing to do with her. I am pleasantly surprised that ABC Put this on their wire. ABC has had some not just bad, but grossly inaccurate articles about Palin that when I get time I will post and show how bad they are. Of course did the media and the blogs go run with it? Did Alan Colmes report it? Nope and Nope.

In the mean time, if you want a complete explanation of Palin’s Earmarks and why she asked for them just click HERE and HERE and HERE.

Interesting how Obama and Biden get no press or smear machine critiques over their use of federal earmarks or when Joe Biden’s son lobbied Obama for federal earmarks, even though Obama denied it. They have nothing to say about Biden and Obama voting for the bridge to nowhere.

They also have nothing to say about Obama’s $935.7 million in earmarks he spent including $1 million for the hospital his wife works at. If Palin had gotten a $1 million earmark for her husband, would we ever hear the end of it from the elite media and the smear outfits like HuffPost and DailyKOS and Alan Colmes?

It is a shame that in the rush to be the first out with a news story that reporters and their editors don’t properly investigate what they are reporting. It seems like some simple fact checking could have taken the spin out of the story.

  2. I AM GLAD TO SEE THAT SOMEONE IS CHECKING THE REAL FACTS!
