Ayn Rand on why American universities have become anti-intellectual.

Posted by iusbvision on January 31, 2009

I like Ayn Rand. I adore her novels and I think that 80% of her philosophy has great merit. In this interview with talk host Tom Snyder in 1978 Rand hits it out of the park. (Video 2 at 4:10 is where she talks about America and universities).

Part I:

part II:

Part III:

In part one she talks about “does the reality you perceive exist?”. For most people and professors I have met in college the answer is no. Most schools no longer train students in Aristotle’s methods of discerning reality by comparing it to known truths and thinking in a way that is not situationally convenient but is consistent. Most people today take their normative view of how they wish or feel the world should be and graft that onto their perception of reality. In part two Rand talks about how universities are producing intellectual idiots.

In video three she continues her point from video two and begins to talk about what she calls “the age on envy”. It is a brilliant point. Students who do well in school are teased. Black kids who try to get good grades are at times called “Oreos” and those who succeed are attacked for their success. We have a tax code that punishes success etc.

“What will save this country is not it’s ‘intellectuals’ but its people.” – Ayn Rand

Rand says that she believes that the country’s so called intellectuals would bring the United States to collapse if we let them. She also speaks of how conservatives have lost their way by not understanding how to defend and preserve capitalism, freedom and the other ideas that the country was founded upon. Rand states that the Founders did not have a moral code to match their political code, this is of course most incorrect. The Founders understood that one cannot have a free society that works without self restraint and personal responsibility that is such a key facet of the Judeo-Christian ethic.

FNC Analysis of Republican Stimulus Alternative Plan

Posted by iusbvision on January 31, 2009

Obama’s own economic model shows the GOP plan is better.

Ed Morrissey Analyzes:

I will share the numbers, though, because all of us should be shouting these comparisons from the rooftops:

  • The Louisiana Purchase: $217,000,000,000.  (No wonder people thought Jefferson was insane.)
  • The race to the Moon: $237,000,000,000.
  • The New Deal: $500,000,000,000.
  • The Iraq War: $597,000,000,000.
  • The Obama-Reid-Pelosi Porkfest Stimulus:$1,173,000,000,000.

The Iraq War figure uses the mathematics of its critics, which includes the normal cost of the armed forces during that time regardless of their deployment — but so much the better for this comparison.  We could buy more of North America and do another moon shot, and we’d not only spend less than half of the current stimulus, we’d create a lot more jobs, too.  The so-called stimulus costs more than the Iraq War and the New Deal put together.

And while the Iraq War ostensibly cost more than the New Deal, it didn’t leave America anywhere near as bankrupt as the government meddling in the lending markets did.
