Dagny Taggert vs Union Thug

Posted by iusbvision on April 1, 2011

If you found this scene thought provoking please see our previous installment: The Challenge

Many believe a certain film by George Lucas helped Ronald Reagan get elected. Imagine what this film will do.  Actually I will make a prediction right now: Unions will threaten theater’s who run it, there will be bomb threats, there will also likely be some union violence. Any takers on that bet?

Norway to Jews: You’re Not Welcome Here

Posted by iusbvision on March 29, 2011

You have seen us here at IUSB Vision tell you how antisemitism is on the rise in Europe. We have also informed you about the increase in antisemitism on campus. Prof. Dershowitz provides yet another example of just how bad it has become.  (Artwork via Bob Schneider)

Artwork via Bob Schneider

By Alan M. Dershowitz:

I recently completed a tour of Norwegian universities, where I spoke about international law as applied to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But the tour nearly never happened.

Its sponsor, a Norwegian pro-Israel group, offered to have me lecture without any charge to the three major universities. Norwegian universities generally jump at any opportunity to invite lecturers from elsewhere. When my Harvard colleague Stephen Walt, co-author of “The Israel Lobby,” came to Norway, he was immediately invited to present a lecture at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. Likewise with Ilan Pappe, a demonizer of Israel who teaches at Oxford.

My hosts expected, therefore, that their offer to have me present a different academic perspective on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would be eagerly accepted. I have written half a dozen books on the subject presenting a centrist view in support of the two-state solution. But the universities refused.

The dean of the law faculty at Bergen University said he would be “honored” to have me present a lecture “on the O.J. Simpson case,” as long as I was willing to promise not to mention Israel. An administrator at the Trondheim school said that Israel was too “controversial.”

The University of Oslo simply said “no” without offering an excuse. That led one journalist to wonder whether the Norwegian universities believe that I am “not entirely house-trained.”

Only once before have I been prevented from lecturing at universities in a country. The other country was Apartheid South Africa.

Despite the faculties’ refusals to invite me, I delivered three lectures to packed auditoriums at the invitation of student groups. I received sustained applause both before and after the talks.

It was then that I realized why all this happened. At all of the Norwegian universities, there have been efforts to enact academic and cultural boycotts of Jewish Israeli academics. This boycott is directed against Israel’s “occupation” of Palestinian land—but the occupation that the boycott supporters have in mind is not of the West Bank but rather of Israel itself. Here is the first line of their petition: “Since 1948 the state of Israel has occupied Palestinian land . . .”

The administrations of the universities have refused to go along with this form of collective punishment of all Israeli academics, so the formal demand for a boycott failed. But in practice it exists. Jewish pro-Israel speakers are subject to a de facto boycott.

The first boycott signatory was Trond Adresen, a professor at Trondheim. About Jews, he has written: “There is something immensely self-satisfied and self-centered at the tribal mentality that is so prevalent among Jews. . . . [They] as a whole, are characterized by this mentality. . . . It is no less legitimate to say such a thing about Jews in 2008-2009 than it was to make the same point about the Germans around 1938.”

This line of talk—directed at Jews, not Israel—is apparently acceptable among many in Norway’s elite. Consider former Prime Minister Kare Willock’s reaction to President Obama’s selection of Rahm Emanuel as his first chief of staff: “It does not look too promising, he has chosen a chief of staff who is Jewish.” Mr. Willock didn’t know anything about Mr. Emanuel’s views—he based his criticism on the sole fact that Mr. Emanuel is a Jew. Perhaps unsurprisingly, fewer than 1,000 Jews live in Norway today.

The country’s foreign minister recently wrote an article justifying his contacts with Hamas. He said that the essential philosophy of Norway is “dialogue.” That dialogue, it turns out, is one-sided. Hamas and its supporters are invited into the dialogue, but supporters of Israel are excluded by an implicit, yet very real, boycott against pro-Israel views.

Mr. Dershowitz is a law professor at Harvard.

In 2008 did college students become “Obama Zombies”?

Posted by iusbvision on March 29, 2011

Just a few hints:

Even The Onion got in on the Obama Zombie theme. “They have proven that their minds can be taken over my empty rhetoric”…

Peggy Joseph:

A group sat outside of the polls and interviewed voters coming out of the polls. This speaks for itself (the energy policy question was prophetic):

I have my own personal story about Obama Zombies:

During the 2008 election I was in Dr. Bennion’s 400 level elections class.

Dr. Bennion asked the class, “Who here believes that young people are supporting Obama because they have increased knowledge?” Everyone in the class except myself and the only black male in the class raised their hand.

“Who believes that young people in have been taken in by slick marketing?” The black male and myself raised our hands.

So Dr. Bennion put the onus on me to justify my position. This was easy.

This was shortly after Joe the Plumber had his confrontation with Barack Obama. So I asked the class, “Who here has heard about Joe the Plumber?” Almost everyone raised their hand. “Who has heard that Joe the Plumber is no good because he owned property taxes on a property he used to own? Almost everyone raised their hand again. “Who here heard that Joe doesn’t count because after all he isn’t even a real plumber because he didn’t have his own plumbing license and worked as an apprentice under his boss?” Again almost everyone raised their hand.

Then I dropped the bomb (now keep in mind that this is a room filled with seniors in poli-sci and alleged political junkies). I asked, “OK now who here can name me two of the three employers Barack Obama had before he ran for State Senate?” – Silence.

“This is what I thought. You can tell me minor details about Joe the Plumber and you do not even know the basic employment history of your chosen candidate. You are political science majors. People are going to be counting on you to give a professional analysis. I rest my case.”

Education Dept. Investigates Complaint of Anti-Semitism at UC-Santa Cruz

Posted by iusbvision on March 26, 2011

Anti Israeli-ism and anti-Zionism often goes too far on campus. This is no secret. When you have professors who are PLO/Hamas sympathizers and professors who are so outrageously biased that they use Jimmy Carter’s mistake ridden anti-Israeli screed as a textbook it creates a hostile environment for Jews and supporters of Israel’s right to exist. And when I was in student government I got complaints from Jewish students about these professors but none would go on the record out of fear of grade retaliation.

So what to do? Campus Watch does a great job of outing bigoted academics, but many academics are very comfortable in their bigotry. This is also about academic freedom. Many bigots use academic freedom as a shield for bigoted indoctrination and harassment of Jews. Antisemitism is quite fashionable among the far left so many academics and administrators provide cover for each other. The excuse is always the same “You just oppose any critique of Israel”. Of course this is a canard because those who say that provide nothing even close to a balanced view of the issue and only make a token gesture at it when investigated.

The course could be taught from the Hamas perspective for half a semester and from the Israeli perspective the other half. Or it could be a two semester course.

Eventually the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights (OCR) came out with a policy that very imbalanced anti-Israeli-ism is antisemitism and is actionable. While freedom of speech and academic freedom issues should prevent close cases from being acted upon, which is a good thing because one should tilt the scales toward freedom, this policy could be effective at going after the more egregious cases, which is long over due.

The Chronicle:

The U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights has announced plans to investigate the University of California at Santa Cruz for anti-Semitism, based on a lecturer’s complaint that administrators there had turned a deaf ear to her concerns that critics of Israel were creating a hostile climate for Jewish people on the campus.

The case marks the first major investigation of anti-Semitism on a college campus by the civil-rights office, known as OCR, since its decision last fall to step up its efforts against such discrimination in a manner that some civil-rights experts saw as likely to pull the agency into debates over campus speech critical of Israel or Zionism. The University of California system is now defending itself against allegations of anti-Semitism on several fronts, as its Irvine campus remains the subject of a separate OCR investigation, undertaken in 2008, and its Berkeley campus and system administration were named in a discrimination lawsuit filed by a Jewish student this month.

Kenneth L. Marcus, who was the Education Department’s assistant secretary for civil rights from 2002 to 2004 and now directs the Institute for Jewish and Community Research’s efforts to fight anti-Semitism, said on Tuesday that the investigation of Santa Cruz “would have been a nonstarter” if the OCR had not adopted the harder line against anti-Semitism urged by his organization and other Jewish groups.

Under the agency’s changed approach toward such complaints, announced in October as part of a broader effort to crack down on forms of student bullying and harassment seen as violating antidiscrimination laws, the OCR made clear that it intends to investigate charges of anti-Semitism where the discrimination might be based partly on ethnicity, and will be less likely to assume that anti-Semitic incidents are the result of religious discrimination, which falls outside its purview.

The Santa Cruz investigation “is a really important signal from OCR that they may be taking their new approach to anti-Semitism as seriously as we wanted them to,” Mr. Marcus said. “There is still a big question as to how vigorously they will pursue cases that involve a mix of anti-Israelism and anti-Semitism. This suggests a willingness to go forward.”

‘Harassment and Intimidation’

The new investigation is in response to a June 2009 complaint sent to the OCR by Tammi Rossman-Benjamin, a lecturer in Hebrew on the campus. In her letter, she describes several incidents in recent years in which administrators there rejected demands that the university drop its sponsorship of events focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that she regarded as one-sided attacks on Israel and Zionism. In some cases, she said, all that resulted from such complaints was that the people who brought them were villified by faculty members as threatening academic freedom.

“The anti-Israel discourse and behavior in classrooms and at departmentally and college-sponsored events at [Santa Cruz] is tantamount to institutional discrimination against Jewish students, which has resulted in their intellectual and emotional harassment and intimidation, and has adversely affected their educational experience at the university,” Ms. Rossman-Benjamin’ letter said. [This is exactly the goal of the Muslim Brotherhood sponsored chapters of the MSA and their far left allies – Editor]

In a letter sent to Ms. Rossman-Benjamin on March 7, Arthur Zeidman, director of the OCR’s enforcement office in San Francisco, said his agency would investigate whether the university had failed to fufill its obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to respond to her concerns. He noted that the OCR’s decision to open such an investigation “in no way implies” that it has made a determination as to the merits of her complaint to the agency.

In a written statement, Santa Cruz’s campus counsel, Carole Rossi, said the university would “fully cooperate” with the OCR’s investigation.

The separate lawsuit against the University of California system was filed in U.S. District Court this month by Jessica Felber, a former Berkeley student who now works as a campus liaison for Hasbara Fellowships, an organization established by the Jewish organization Aish International. It argues that the university tolerated an anti-Semitic climate on the campus and failed to deal with complaints of “campus terrrorist incitements” by two student groups, the Muslim Students Union and Students for Justice in Palestine.

The lawsuit accuses the university of failing to have provided Ms. Felber with adequate protection against anti-Semitic violence in a March 2010 incident in which a student involved with Students for Justice in Palestine “intentionally rammed” a shopping cart into her on the campus, causing her an injury for which she received medical attention.

The Berkelely campus on Tuesday issued a statement that said it “is committed to maintaining an inclusive and respectful campus environment that is safe and welcoming for everyone, without regard to religion, race, ethnicity, or ideology,” and rejects “any allegation or implication that bias or prejudice plays any role” in how the administration deals with students or student groups.

Parents complain to NYC school because child had no idea what the Pledge of Allegiance is…

Posted by iusbvision on March 25, 2011

Via The Blaze:

Imagine, for a moment, you’re sitting next to your child and video of a class reciting the Pledge of Allegiance flashes across the TV. Your child tugs on your shirt and innocently asks, “Mom, what are they doing? What are they saying?” Shocking, you might say. It would never happen. Guess what? It happened in New York City.

Joe and Winnie Fleischer of Brooklyn, NY were flabbergasted when they realized recently their daughter Brianna, 8, had no idea what the Pledge of Allegiance was. They thought it was common knowledge, especially in the classroom.

“I was shocked that she didn’t know the pledge,” Joe, a NYC firefighter, told the New York Daily News. “I thought she’d been doing it in school.”

They thought wrong.

So they went to the school, PS29, to change that. After spirited meetings with parents, teachers, and an “educational unit for kids,” the principal agreed to have the Pledge broadcast over the school’s loud speaker “for the first time in years.”

But here‘s what’s interesting. In New York, reciting the Pledge daily in schools is the law. The principal, then, isn’t doing anything revolutionary — she‘s just complying with what’s been mandated since just after 9/11.

Do Academics Hate Your Religious Parents?

Posted by iusbvision on March 25, 2011

Public School Teacher: We hate you. Now give us your kids so that we can turn them against you.

That is what it is like for many schools. Every few days I have to sit down with my child and undo the damage that is done in public school. I have to undo the union propaganda they push on my child in class, the one sided politicking, the slanted history education, and the eco-extremism.

David French via National Review:

Over at the Alliance Defense Fund’s Academic Freedom File, my colleague Jeff Shafer has written a fascinating blog post analyzing the intellectual roots of academic efforts to stigmatize Christianity and divorce kids from their religious upbringing. It begins:

The late American philosopher Richard Rorty (d. 2007) in describing his assessment of the role of university professor wrote:  “When we American college teachers encounter religious fundamentalists, we do not consider the possibility of reformulating our own practices of justification so as to give more weight to the authority of the Christian scriptures.  Instead, we do our best to convince these students of the benefits of secularization.”  The re-education imperative is one that he, “like most Americans who teach humanities or social science in colleges and universities, invoke when we try to arrange things so that students who enter as bigoted, homophobic, religious fundamentalists will leave college with views more like our own.”  Rorty explains to the “fundamentalist” parents of his students:  “we are going to go right on trying to discredit you in the eyes of your children, trying to strip your fundamentalist religious community of dignity, trying to make your views seem silly rather than discussable.”  He helpfully explains that “I think those students are lucky to find themselves under the benevolent Herrschaft [domination] of people like me, and to have escaped the grip of their frightening, vicious, dangerous parents.”

In fact, some of our student clients have heard simplified versions of this very sentiment, and I can distinctly remember my own southern, religious upbringing being venomously caricatured during my law-school days. The fact that my father was a math professor who earned his Ph.D. (a real-life Good Will Hunting) in a mere ten months was irrelevant compared with his status as an elder in a very conservative evangelical church. I had to be “rescued” from my own heritage.

I stubbornly resisted rescue, but many students — eager for acceptance and feeling isolated — give up, surrendering to the dominant culture and feeding an academic beast that demands conformity, in speech and belief.

Viral Bully Kisses Concrete Video Shows “Peace Through Strength” Works

Posted by iusbvision on March 25, 2011

The administrators do not want to admit that there is bullying going on in their school, so it is easier to deny it is happening, or blame the victim or ignore it because the victim is already likely isolated. This answers the following question: Where were the zero tolerance policies on violence when the big boned kid was getting kicked, punched, tripped and in one case tied to a pole?

For the first time the chubby kid’s life is his own.

Reminder: The “popular” and “hip” RT is actually Russia Today. Anti-Western, anti-democratic & antisemitic.

Posted by iusbvision on March 24, 2011

You hear about reporters who are killed, tortured, or just vanish in Russia by Putin’s goons. RT will never have that problem. RT is perhaps the best and most effective anti-western propaganda on the net.

My research specialty in college was attitude change propaganda and no one does it better than Russia Today.

RT often isn’t news, it is entertainment propaganda. It looks great, the women are hot, it has a slick presentation with top notch production value. Notice how the screen changes every few seconds (MTV style) to keep young peoples eyes peeled. The content is designed to deliver an attitude with only a few facts that create a propaganda narrative. The piece not so subtlety pushes the entire “Jewish Conspiracy” angle pushed by supremacists, skinheads, and militant Islamists.

Cynthia McKinney is shown as a credible legislator and presidential candidate. The very young and those around the world have no idea that she is a full blown antisemite who is considered too nutty to be taken seriously even by her own party. The events form the last few days about Palestinians dancing in the streets over a young family being murdered by terrorists, rockets being fired from Gaza at Israeli civilians, a bombing in Israel and yet none of that is in this report. The report makes it seem that Israel is the big mean aggressor and those “wascally wepublicans” are in league with them.

Yet Another “Stupid Public School Administrators Illegally Discriminate Against Christian Student and Get Themselves Sued” Case

Posted by iusbvision on March 23, 2011

This is why FIRE is working to get the laws and case law changed on issues like this to strip immunity form public officials who know darn well they are breaking the law and just dig in their heals because they know the taxpayer is flipping the bill.

Nutty administrators who do this should lose a few years salary when they do something this foolish and then maybe more would have respect for the law.

Alliance Defense Fund:

ADF is international now. In the next case the German government jailed parents for pulling their child out of a graphic sex ed class. This is a violation  of human rights conventions and treaties Germany has signed onto and promised to uphold.

Remember when we wrote about this case from U. C. Davis? In this case they actually wrote in their campus speech code that it is not OK to religiously discriminate against anyone, except Christians as they are the dominant culture oppressors. Only on a college campus can you find people this stupid.

Now UC Davis will have to go back to selectively enforcing and breaking the rules to discriminate against Christians, how sad for them.

The Bully Victim Who Fought Back – Exclusive ACA Interview with Casey Heynes

Posted by iusbvision on March 22, 2011

If the school has a zero tolerance policy for violence where was the school when he was being hit and kicked and tied to a pole? Administrators do not want to admit that such things go on in their school, and since the victim is often isolated anyways it is easier to blame him, dismiss him and ignore the zero tolerance policy as long as he is the victim and pretend it isn’t happening. If there was ever a case against govt bureaucrats running schools this is it.

Now the government is considering a form of the Clery Act for grade schools. I fear this may do more harm than good. Universities now do what they can to not report crimes, convince people not to press charges, take down video cameras in university parking garages etc so that they will have less to report. Schools will not want to report bullying to the government, so the incentive will be to paint the victim as the instigator and a liar.

Says one commenter:

The skinny kid hit him repeatedly, the heroic part is Casey not beating him into a bloody pulp after the slam. If you can’t see that, you are willfully blind or more likely just an idiot.

Psychiatrist: Liberalism is a mental disorder

Posted by iusbvision on March 20, 2011

I would not say that this is true of all of them. As there are some who are elitist and genuinely believe that society cannot get buy without their guiding, ruling hand.

With that said, much of what is said certainly rings true.

Lisa Anderson Wright:

A veteran psychiatrist now claims that liberalism is a mental disorder, not purely a political choice.

“Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded,” said Dr. Lyle Rossiter, author of the new book, The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness.

“Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave.”

In other words, it’s not their fault. (That statement sounds suspiciously liberal to me.)

What I’m not cool with is behavior that clearly looks like liberal lunacy to me… behavior that I previously just chalked up to lousy parenting, pure ignorance or perhaps a shortage of oxygen in utero. I never imagined the craziness I witness daily on the left might actually be certifiable by professionals.

Here’s an example. Just because I’m a constitutional conservative, liberals love to libel me: they deign to know what I think, feel and believe. Newsflash to libs: I don’t share every single belief held by every single person on the right, just as many bible-carrying, pew-kneeling, rosary-bead-praying Catholics don’t subscribe to every single tenant of their religion. I know divorced Catholics, Catholics who’ve had abortions, Catholics who’ve texted nude pictures of themselves and surfed porn sites… I even know gay Catholics. The point is, they all still consider themselves Catholics.

I’m not insane: I know the futility of engaging or entering into discussions, debates and mudslinging about incendiary topics that inflame both sides of the aisle, like: abortion, gay marriage, gays in the miltary, Obama’s birth certificate, Obama’s religion, Obama’s choice of pastor, Obama’s friends, prayer in schools, prayers in Congress, memorial crosses on public lands, and, of course, the so-called “truth” about 9/11. (This is an abbreviated list, of course.)

Life’s too short, and libs just act too crazy about this stuff. Instead, I prefer to focus on the most important tenant of constitutional conservatism: reducing the size, power and cost of a centralized federal government, while returning power, money and liberty to the states and We, the People.

That being said, before Dr. Rossiter’s press release hit the AP, I suspected liberalism might be a disease, like insanity. Why else would so many libs act so ka-ray-zee? (Not all, my lovely lib family and friends, not all!)

For example, on the Nevada Politics Facebook page this week, I mentioned I lean to the right, and BAM! I was immediately (and repeatedly) accused of being: stupid, a Nazi, a no-nothing (as in, I know nothing), a “BIRFER,” a friend of the uber-wealthy, a sheep for corporate tools, an advocate of child labor and 60-hour work weeks, a moron, a freaky teabagger, an idiot, a pro-nuke bagger and finally, “an extremist tea bagger writing revisionist history and scapegoting regular working people.”

Nothing I wrote in any previous discussion, nor anywhere on the net, could lead a sane person to deduce and declare those things about me. They were pure fiction, fantasy and fallacy, violently spewed forth like projectile vomit by several liberals at Nevada Politics, including one decidedly vile, ungentlemanly-man, whose parents aptly named him “Dick.”

I’m sure my final attempt at humor (and logic) perturbed him. “If conservatives are ‘Teabaggers,’ then liberals are our ‘Teabaggees’… which means we’ve got you by the balls, Dick.”

Thank you, Dr. Rossiter, for positing that liberalism is a mental disorder. I couldn’t agree more.

The Nation Magazine Doctors David Horowitz Video in Smear Attempt

Posted by iusbvision on March 18, 2011

This is what Marxists do folks…

Frontpage Magazine:

There is a large fifth column of Americans who sympathize with our jihadist enemies and wish our nation ill. These are the people who seek to block every inquiry into Islamic terror, and every attempt to refer to “Islamic terror,” with cries of “McCarthyism” and “witch-hunt.” These attacks are designed to demonize the inquirers as “Islamophobes” and bigots who want to “lynch all Muslims.” This attempt by leftists and jihadists to conflate all Muslims with terrorists is merely the latest in a long history of radical attempts to hide their terrorist fish in the “ocean of the people.”

This very accusation was actually leveled at me at Brooklyn College the other night, after an hour-long talk I gave detailing the hate-filled, genocidal agendas of Hizbollah, Hamas, the rulers of Iran and the terrorist agents of the Palestinian Authority. [To see the full talk, Click Here] During my talk, I provided chapter and verse documentation of the bloody-thirsty intentions openly proclaimed by leaders of the Palestinian cause and supported by their campus sympathizers across America. The chants shouted during “Israel Apartheid Week” this spring demand a Palestinian state “from the river to the sea.” A Palestine stretching from the Jordan River, Israel’s eastern boundary, to the Mediterranean sea, its boundary to the West, would obliterate the Jewish state, wiping it from the map. Which is precisely what these hate weeks against the Jews on college campuses are intended to bring about.

The Hamas supporters of the Palestine Club (sponsors of the hate week against the Jews on the Brooklyn campus) who came to hear my speech could only respond to the evidence I presented with this retort: “you want to lynch all Muslims.” They had no other response because there is no other response. The indisputable fact is that Hamas and the Palestinian Authority openly proclaim that Israel should not exist. Their supporters from the Muslim Students Association to the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), which is an actual spin-off of Hamas, agree. Hence the only course open to them is to turn the aggressors into victims, and the victims into bigots.

No sooner was the video of my speech posted on the Internet than Philip Weiss who runs a blog for the Nation put up a version of the video, which had been edited with a hatchet. It is called “Horowitz Spews Hatred at Brooklyn College.”  Weiss’s employer, theNation magazine, has a long history of supporting America’s enemies and their genocidal activities — from the Communists in Russia to the Communists in Cambodia and Vietnam. It came as no surprise to me, therefore, that the Nation’s leftists would be enablers of the Islamic jihad against the democracies of the West and of the war against the Jews. But even I was taken aback by the ham-fisted dishonesty of the cut that Philip Weiss had tossed off without even a note to the unsuspecting that the video had been doctored.

In Weiss’s video I am seen accusing Palestinian terrorists of being Nazis and Palestinians of having sunk to a moral low unequalled in history. But the reasons for these judgments were consigned to the cutting room floor, so they appear to be merely the kind of bilious venom that the left itself is so adept at. Here are statements I read to the audience (which can be viewed on the uncut video of my speech) from two Palestinian leaders – one the founder of Hamas, and the other the chairman of the Gaza parliament – expressing their intentions towards Israel’s Jews – and, indeed, towards all Jews:

“There is no place for you Jews among us, and you have no future among the nations of the world.  You are headed to annihilation.” — Mahmoud Al-Zahar

“Be certain that America is on its way to disappear,… Allah, take hold of the Jews and their allies, Allah, take hold of the Americans and their allies… Allah, count them and kill them to the last one and don’t leave even one.”  – Ahmad Bahar

If these are not the sentiments of Nazis, then what is?

The other statement I made, that the Palestinians are morally sick and have sunk to a moral depth unrivalled by any other people in history, was a conclusion anyone might draw from what are indisputable facts. For while ethnic groups and races have been oppressed from the beginning of time, no other people in history has strapped bombs to its own children and sent them to blow themselves up in order to kill other children, telling them that if they committed these murders they would go to heaven and become saints and, if they were lucky enough to be males, would receive 72 virgins as a reward. If this isn’t morally sick, I don’t know what is.

So for blurting out the impolitic truth I am tarred now as an anti-Muslim bigot by supporters of Jew-hatred and terror at the Nation Institute, and by their mindless cohorts on the political left, and by the supporters of Hamas among the members of the Palestine Club and the Muslim Students Association and their campus allies. I can live with that. But don’t think for a moment that this is my personal problem. It is the problem faced by everyone and anyone who will stand up to the enemies among us, who hate our freedoms, and are working within our institutions and our homeland to take those freedoms away.

FLEECED: Six-figure salaries double at University of Michigan-Flint over four years

Posted by iusbvision on March 18, 2011

Michigan Live:

FLINT, Michigan — You don’t have to be the boss to make six figures at the University of Michigan-Flint — and sometimes you can even make more than your boss.

As the number of deans, associate deans and program directors grew at the Flint campus over the last five years, so have administrative paychecks.

Six-figure salaries more than doubled on campus since 2006, according to the newest faculty and staff salary information recently released by UM.

Nearly 50 of the roughly 1,000 employees made $100,000 or more at UM-Flint, compared to about 20 four years earlier.

Budget constraints also didn’t prevent raises. Among the top 30 earners, the average raise hovered around $3,000 with the highest raise being $10,000. The campus paid out nearly $95,000 total in raises among the top 30, according to a Flint Journal review.

Critics argue that at a time when layoffs and pay cuts elsewhere have made it harder for families to afford college, big raises and paychecks don’t help the case of colleges that continue to hike tuition every year.

“The hiring trend has unmistakably gone toward hiring far more non-teaching employees than teaching employees,” said Matthew Ladner, vice president for research at the Goldwater Institute, an Arizona-based public policy research organization that studied administrative expenses at top universities last year. “You start throwing around six-figure salaries like it’s nothing because everyone else is doing it but the status quo doesn’t work anymore. Administrative bloat is driving up costs.”

Ann Althouse vs Product of Wisconsin Schools

Wow.

Where do thousands of kids learn such nonsense in lock step. If I were a union rep I would blame the parents I imagine. Except where would the parents get everyone together to get so many thousands of kids to learn such uniform extremism?

Russia Today – Police Tyranny/Brutality on the rise in the United States:

I would like to comment on this. First of all it should be said that RT likes to portray America in a negative light as this is nothing new for them. It should also be said because they have a foreign angle, it gives them a perspective and sometimes even a clarity that domestic media lacks. While I believe that they tackled this story because it makes American look bad, in this case they did not have to stretch it much. Police brutality is on the rise and the problem with police tyranny is also something I have noticed, but what is not reported is that many of the police are not happy about it.

I am in the unique situation of having contact with many police and many people who get tickets for minor technical violations regularly, and while there are bad apples in the police, most I speak with are NOT happy about quotas for pulling people over, most are not happy about being pushed into writing full blown tickets for having just one of your two licence plate bulbs out etc, but this is what local and state governments are pushing them into. The result is bad, people are starting to resent the police. The push to suck revenue out of citizens has gone too far. Soon I expect this to become a political issue.

Bottom line, this RT piece is spot on, but for the wrong reasons.

Dr. Clare Spark: Inflaming minorities in the universities

Posted by iusbvision on March 15, 2011

Dr. Spark:

We can’t talk about schools and teachers unions without inspecting the current curriculum, which is negative about America NOW, as opposed to a straightforward account of achievements and failures.

I have written extensively about the master narrative that dominates the teaching of U.S. History in  post-civil rights America throughout this website. The mobilizing of pro-government workers unions has put this issue front and center. The purpose of this blog is to remind our visitors that the humanities curriculum as it was adjusted after the assassinations of MLK Jr. and Malcolm X could have done nothing else but to intensify already existent divisions in our country, thence to under-educate the students most in need of high quality education that would prepare them to compete in the job market in fields where there is high demand for skilled labor.

I refer of course to the focus on Native Americans as victims of westward expansion; the Mexican War; slavery, the slave trade, the Civil War and Reconstruction; the Chinese Exclusion Act; the internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII; and the exclusionary policies of labor unions until the establishment of the CIO. Not only these events were and are deployed by leftists and liberals to insure the hatred of “the dominant culture” (including the “racist” white working class), but these events that did of course happen, are said to linger in the present, despite a congeries of government programs at all levels, including preferential treatment in the race for college admissions, hiring in government employment, separatist ethnic studies programs in universities and colleges, and in corporations.

1960s activists against the Viet Nam war and “the system” have taken over the command posts of education and media, always in the name of a higher law than those “bourgeois” rules that constitute the basis for our democratic republic. Such high dudgeon is then used to justify lawless actions against “the system” that has tortured and dispossessed the minorities who comprise so much of the base of the Democratic Party.  So although we see mostly white faces in the Wisconsin protesters, I suggest  that their “civil disobedience” is experienced by them as a link to abolitionists and others who argued for “the higher law” that abrogated the Constitution, seen as a slaveholders’ document. OTOH, recall that Charles Sumner, the antislavery Senator from Massachusetts and a founder of the Republican Party, did not appeal to a higher law, but rather argued that the case for antislavery lay in the Declaration of Independence and in the Preamble to the Constitution; that the individual States were akin to Republics that should insure the promised equality in our founding documents, hence could not use “state’s rights” to justify slavery and its expansion. After the Civil War, he pleaded that the hatred must stop. For this, along with his “radical” proposal for compensating the freedmen with land and full civil rights, I have inferred that he has been diminished by some key academic authorities as harsh and extreme.

Already, government and other unions are mobilizing across the nation to strengthen their collective hands against an insurgent Republican Party. It is to be hoped that the public will use this opportunity to examine every phase of our educational system, including the demoralizing curriculum that is hurting everyone, indeed, that in tandem with much of the mass media, is inspiring cynicism on a massive scale, threatening to bring down the Republic, a Republic that is our “last best hope” for the future of our species.

Dr. Spark received her Bachelor of Science from Cornell, Masters in Teaching from Harvard, and her doctorate in U.S. & European Intellectual History form UCLA.

Oregon State Univ Moves to Expell Republican Candidate’s Three Children

Posted by iusbvision on March 13, 2011

WND:

On Nov. 4, 2010, as soon as the election results were in and they were sure their candidate had won, faculty administrators at Oregon State University gave new meaning to the term “political payback.”

They initiated an attack on my three children – Joshua, Bethany and Matthew – for the purpose of throwing them all out of the OSU graduate school, despite their outstanding academic and research accomplishments. OSU is a liberal socialist Democrat stronghold in Oregon that received a reported $27 million in earmark funding from my opponent, Peter DeFazio, and his Democrat colleagues during the last legislative session.

Thus, Democrat activist David Hamby and militant feminist and chairman of the nuclear engineering department Kathryn Higley are expelling four-year Ph.D. student Joshua Robinson from OSU at the end of the current academic quarter and turning over the prompt neutron activation analysis facility Joshua built for his thesis work and all of his work in progress to Higley’s husband, Steven Reese. Reese, an instructor in the department, has stated that he will use these things for his own professional gain. Joshua’s apparatus, which he built and added to the OSU nuclear reactor with the guidance and ideas of his mentor, Michael Hartman, earned Joshua the award for best Masters of Nuclear Engineering thesis at OSU and has been widely complimented by scientists at prominent U.S. nuclear facilities.

Meanwhile, faculty member Todd Palmer notified four-year Ph.D. student Bethany Robinson (OSU grade point average 3.89) that he was terminating her thesis work and taking all of her work in progress for himself. Some of Bethany’s graduate work has already been used, withoutcreditto Bethany, in the thesis of another favored student now recently hired on the department faculty.

My children and I attempted to counter all these actions against us as they unfolded, but were initially uncertain as to their ultimate intent. All became clear, however, when OSU faculty administrators abruptly took a further and very serious prejudicial action toward Joshua. At that point, OSU Professor of Nuclear Engineering Jack Higginbotham, who was privy to all of the meetings and actions, warned us and came to our defense.

Professor Higginbotham, who also serves as president of the OSU Faculty Senate anddirectorof the Oregon NASA Space Science Consortium, has been a member of the OSU faculty for 24 years. He has held many responsible positions in the university and has received numerous professional awards. Moreover, he is very widely admired for the many instances in which he has given special help to students at OSU. This is a man who thinks always of his students and never of himself.

Professor Higginbotham warned us that faculty administrators at OSU were working to make certain that Joshua, his sister Bethany and, if possible, his brother Matthew never receive Ph.D. degrees in nuclear engineering from OSU, regardless of their examination, academic and research performance. Professor Higginbotham then reviewed with us the details of the plan to destroy the education of these students and advised me to do anything I could to protect my children.

Since November, a remarkable battle has been raging within OSU. I considered an immediate public exposure of this plot and warned the faculty of this possibility, but instead my family and I decided to try to prevent a scandal at OSU and save the students within the confines of OSU. We fought these unprincipled academics on their own ground and held them off for four months. That effort is, however, now failing, and Joshua and Bethany are both slated for dismissal from the department of nuclear engineering very soon. Also, unless action is taken immediately, Professor Higginbotham’s career will be completely destroyed.

Read on at the link above.

Just how stupid are Columbia University professors???

Posted by iusbvision on March 12, 2011

They are so stupid… and in this case stupid is the best word….that their latest rant against the military is that it is discriminatory against the aged and the physically disabled.

Wow.

We have reported just how stupid the nonsense that comes out of Columbia Journalism Review and to be honest I was virtually certain that stupidity in such a degree could not be surpassed. I now stand corrected.

Columbia Professors against ROTC:

Equally important is the fact that ROTC will remain a discriminatory institution even after DADT has become a relic of history. There are many reasons–from physical disability to age–for which people are disqualified from admission.

Lee Doren from “How The World Works” posted a brilliant rant about academic stupidity and of course, the latest abject stupidity form Michael Moore.

Chuck Norris: U.S. public schools are “Progressive” indoctrination camps

Posted by iusbvision on March 11, 2011

Chuck Norris:

(This is Part 1 of a two-part series on U.S. public schools.)

Why should liberals want to change the public educational system when it is turning out the product they have been striving for years to produce?

Check outthese real news headlines from the past several weeks and months about the state of U.S. public education across the country:

  • “U.S. teachers tell U.N. sex is a ‘spectrum’ – advocate mandatory classes to freestudentsfrom ‘religion'”
  • “Principal orders Ten Commandments yanked from school lockers”
  • “Teens ask for more sex ed, greater condom availability”
  • “State university defines Christians as ‘oppressors'”
  • “Why Catholic schools score better than public schools”
  • “Teachers take charge to save ailing public schools”
  • “Schools’ mandatory Arabic classes create firestorm”
  • “District taking money, but censoring Christians?”
  • “No opting out of pro-gay school propaganda”
  • “District pays up for slamming student’s rosary”
  • “Judge cites homeschoolers for violating U.N. mandate – Police interrogate parents, confiscate their curriculum”
  • “Some say schools giving Muslims special treatment”

On Dec. 27, 1820, Thomas Jefferson wrote about his vision for the University of Virginia (chartered in 1819), “This institution will be based on the illimitable freedom of the human mind. For here we are not afraid to follow the truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error as long as reason is left free to combat it.”

But what should happen 200 years later when our public schools and universities avoid the testing of truths? Or suppress alternate opinions because they are unpopular or politically incorrect? Or no longer tolerate opinions now considered errors or obsolete by the elite? What happens when sociopolitical agendas or scientific paradigms dominate academic views to the exclusion of a minority even being mentioned?

What happens when the political and public educational pendulum swings from concern for the tyranny of sectarianism in Jefferson’s day to secularism in ours? What happens when U.S. public schools become progressive indoctrination camps?

Dr. Jim Nelson Black, founder and senior policy analyst of the Sentinel Research Associates in Washington, D.C., wrote an excellent book, “Freefall of the American University.” In it, he documents the clear biases pervading our public academic settings. Among that lopsidedness is the intentional training of students to disdain America, freely experiment sexually, forcefully defend issues like abortion and homosexuality, as well as become cultural advocates for political correctness, relativism, globalization, green agendas and tolerance for all.

One of the primary ways these educative platforms are spread is by recruiting and retaining faculty members who reflect and teach them. For example, citing from the polling firm of LuntzResearch, Dr. Black notes that the 57 percent of faculty members represented in our most esteemed universities are Democrats (only 3 percent Republican) and 64 percent identify themselves as liberal (only 6 percent conservative). Moreover, 71 percent of them disagree that “news coverage of political and social issues reflects a liberal bias in the news media.” And the No. 1 answer they gave to the question, “Who has been the best president in the past 40 years?” was Bill Clinton (only 4 percent said Ronald Reagan).

This is why it is no surprise that the two largest teachers unions, the NEA and AFT, are the largest campaign contributors in the nation (giving more than the Teamsters, NRA or any other organization), and that 90 percent of their contributions fund Democratic candidates. In doing so, do we think such funding is going to balance traditional and conservative values in public schools?

The impact of progressivism is being experienced bystudentsacross this land, hundreds of thousands of whom have already cried out withcomplaintsof academic inequity. A sampling of the hundreds of student grievances from across the academic spectrum can even be found on websites like theStudentsfor Academic Freedom and NoIndoctrination.org.

It is also no surprise that an average of 6,000studentsevery year is leaving the approximately 94,000 public schools in America. If the power-to-be over our public schools, likegovernmentand unions, continue to oppose conservative curricula and impose overarching liberal educational revisions and laws, public schools will continue to experience an exodus.

I fully realize there are some great conservative people on the staffs of many public schools and universities, but I know virtually all of them would concur that a liberal bias in our academic curricula and system is overwhelmingly dominant and ubiquitous.

Is thispresent, restrictive and one-sided educational environment that which Thomas Jefferson and other founders intended for the future generations of America? Absolutely not! Rather than encourage free thinking, the U.S. academic system has turned Jefferson’s plans for open education into our culture’s system of indoctrination.

UC Berkeley sued by Jewish student who was attacked by student jihadists. University knew about threats and violence on campus by student Islamic groups and failed to act.

Posted by iusbvision on March 11, 2011

Something similar happened to Ruth Malhotra at Georgia Tech except she was persecuted by far left students, faculty, and administrators. A professor told Ruth that if she attended the Conservative Political Action Conference that it would mean an automatic fail in the class. The professor carried out the threat and when Ruth complained the university exonerated the professor. The threats against Ruth were so bad that local police had to escort her form class to class because university police refused to respond to the threats against her. Ruth and fellow student Orit Sklar,  in conjunction with our friend David French at the Alliance Defense Fund, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Georgia Tech. It gets better, after Georgia Tech lost the first ruling, they put out a press release claiming victory. After the second ruling George Tech suffered a large payout and revocation of their illegal speech codes

Frontpage Magazine:

Frontpage Interview’s guest today is Neal Sher, an attorney practicing in New York City. He, along  with San Francisco attorney Joel Siegal, is presently representing Jessica Felber, a Jewish UC Berkeley student who is suing the university over being physically attacked by Muslim Students.

Previously, Sher was the Director the Justice Department’s Office of Special Investigations, which investigated and prosecuted Nazi criminals in the U.S.  In that capacity, he was responsible for bringing many dozens of prosecutions and for barring former UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim from coming to this country. He also served as the National Executive Director of AIPAC and was the President of the American Section of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists.

FP: Neal Sher, welcome to Frontpage Interview. Tell us about this suit that you are filing on behalf of Jessica Felber. What happened exactly?

Sher: On March 5, 2010, Jessica Felber, a twenty-year-old Jewish student at Berkeley, was attacked and injured on campus during a pro-Israel event while she was holding a sign stating “Israel wants Peace.” Her assailant, Husam Zakharia, also a UC Berkeley student, was the leader of Students for Justice in Palestine at Berkeley. There is no doubt that she was attacked because of her religion and Jewish ancestry.

Defendants – UC Berkeley, the Regents of the University of California and their ranking officials – were fully aware that Zakharia, the SJP and similar student groups had been involved in other incidents on campus to incite violence against and intimidate Jewish and other students. Nevertheless, in clear dereliction of their legal responsibilities, Defendants took no reasonable steps to protect Ms. Felber and others.

The Complaint further describes how the SJP conspires and coordinates with the Muslim Student Association, which has a publicly documented history of affiliation with and support of organizations deemed “terror organizations” by the United States Department of State. That they have resorted to intimidation and harassment is evidenced most recently by the fact that the District Attorney of Orange County, California, has indicted eleven students from these groups for inciting and disrupting a speech given by the Israeli Ambassador to the United States at the University of California, Irvine.

Ignoring complaints from students about the poisonous climate on campus, defendants condoned, allowed and enabled groups such as the Muslim Student Association and the SJP to threaten, harass and intimidate Jewish students and to endanger their health and safety. Their tolerance of the growing cancer of a dangerous anti-Semitic climate on its campuses, and their failure to take adequate measures to quell it, violated the rights of Ms. Felber and other students to enjoy a peaceful campus environment free from threats and intimidation.

FP: Tell us in what ways this is a very significant and important lawsuit. It can be seen in many ways as turning point right?

Sher: This is, to our knowledge, a precedent complaint demanding that the university honor its legal obligations to protect the rights of its students. It is also important because, as people who follow and monitor events on campuses around the country well know, universities and colleges are major battlegrounds for those who are pressing the campaign to delegitimize and denigrate Israel. They have created an atmosphere of intimidation and harassment for Jewish and pro-Israel students which has been condoned and allowed to fester by university officials.

FP: Why did UC Berkeley fail to provide security to Felber?

Sher: It’s also difficult to pinpoint motives. Perhaps officials themselves were intimidated or, perhaps, they were simply hostile to students like Jessica and their causes. But, the central point is that the officials were fully aware of the threats posed by the SJP, MSA and their followers and they failed to respond adequately as they were legally obligated to do.

FP: Your thoughts on the growing Muslim extremism on campuses putting Jewish students in danger?

Sher: Clearly, this is a very serious problem as there has been a growing number of incidents on campuses, not just within the University of California system but throughout the country, where groups like the SJP and MSA have intimidated and harassed students and faculty members.  Moreover, this campaign appears to be highly organized and thoroughly planned.

It is also very troubling that the on-campus activities of the SJP and MSA against Jessica and other students – and the university’s failure to confront them – present a disturbing echo of the darkest period in history: the incitement, intimidation, harassment and violence carried out under the Nazi regime and those of its allies in Europe against Jewish students and scholars in the leading universities of those countries during the turbulent years leading up to and including the Holocaust.

I can tell you that there is a genuine fear by Jessica and other students of Jewish ancestry on campuses throughout the University of California system that the tragic lessons of history have not yet been learned by these defendants. They fear that the University of California campuses are no longer places of hope and dignity, of academic and personal freedom, or of peaceful life and personal safety.

FP: What do you hope this lawsuit will help achieve?

Sher: First, we are demanding damages for Jessica injuries she suffered, physical and otherwise, due to defendant’s failure to honor its legal obligations. And, we would all like to see a sea change in the attitudes and actions on the part of the university and officials. As it now stands, students such as Jessica have been deprived of their constitutional rights and their ability to live and learn in a campus environment free of intimidation, threats and bullying.

FP: The thought of the roles reversed here, and with Berkeley having the same disposition toward the events, is simply unfathomable. What I mean is this: I can’t even imagine (1) Jewish students physically attacking Muslim students on a campus and (2) that if this hypothetically happened, that Berkeley would respond in the same way. First, if Muslim students sensed they were in danger from Jewish students, I am sure Berkeley would have made security arrangements – to say the least. And if Jewish students attacked a Muslim student, while the entire country’s media would be up in arms, Berkeley would be engaged in all kinds of disciplinary action. What are your thoughts on this observation?

Sher: You’ve hit the nail on the head.  There is no question that if the shoe was on the other foot, immediate and decisive action would be taken by the powers that be. It’s time that we demand an end to the hypocrisy and double standards which have gone on far too long and which will be exposed in this lawsuit.  The silent majority should remain silent no longer!

FP: Neal Sher, thank you for joining Frontpage Interview and thank you for coming to the defense of those who are no longer safe from violence on our campuses.

How public schools teach children to hate freedom and humanity

Posted by iusbvision on March 10, 2011

Ann says that kids are fed anti-capitalist, anti-freedom propaganda almost daily. I would say that my experience in college almost mirrors that description.

Ann says that kids are shown Al Gore’s debunked movie several times before they graduate with no balance. I know this is true as I just went through this with Riley High School and my child.

Ann says no one, and I mean no one will stand up in public schools and tell kids how capitalism lifts people up. How it brings wealth and gives people more of a chance for upward mobility. Well in my case in college that was not completely true. I did have one professor who spoke very well about capitalism. The administration fired him for it.

Ann mentions “The Story of Stuff” Marxist indoctrination video – you can see it and a complete refutation HERE.

Ann McElhinney, director/producer of Not Evil Just Wrong and Mine Your Own Business, speaking at Tea Party American Policy Summit in Phoenix (AZ) on February 26th 2011. For more, please see http://www.noteviljustwrong.com and follow Ann on Twitter @annmcelhinney.

The story is further complicated because the boys were all black and the girl was Latino.

Anyone have a theory. I do.

Maybe the valueless, Godless, “progressive” public school system doesn’t impart the kids with a sense of duty and restraint. But that is just a theory.

Columbia Journalism Review is a Smear Outfit. MSNBC Lefty Talker Admits Hiring Actors as Callers.

Posted by iusbvision on March 9, 2011

Too many journalists like to smear, too may far left activists like to smear, too may far left academics like to smear. Put it all together and you get Columbia Journalism Review (CJR).

An example is this story that came out accusing Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck of secretly hiring actors to call in.

FM “Morning Zoo” shows often use a service to have an actor call in with a crazy story everyone can laugh at. Anyone who has worked in radio knows this. FM “zoo” shows have to because those people who they call up for those great laughs have to be actors due to FCC rules. You see it is illegal to put someone on the air unless you can be reasonably sure they know who they are talking to.

So a CJR “reporter” decided to take such a known service and accuse them of calling political news/talk shows with no evidence whatsoever. Said reporter never even called the company who has the service for comment, nor did the reporter call Limbaugh or Hannity to even ask the question. Instead the reporter just made the allegation.

The story gets worse, the story is from Columbia Journalism Review (CJR), allegedly from the finest teaching journalism professors in the country. Journalism teachers who cannot follow the basic ethics rules found in any j-school textbook. CJR is partially funded by George Soros.

UPDATE – MSNBC lefty talker Ed Schultz admits he used hired actors coached by Congressional Democrats as callers. (H/T The Blaze)

His excuse is lame. When my radio show started we had nothing and I built it up with hard work and talent to beat the competition. I never used staged ringers as callers. A good host should be ready to go an entire show filled with great content and never have to take a call. The most obvious reason why is that at times technical difficulties will prevent you form taking calls. People do not listen to a show to hear callers so quite frankly callers are not that important. That is why I never took very many calls on my show.

What will CJR have to say now?

I will have much more on CJR in my upcoming book.

FORMER OBAMA ADVISOR VAN JONES IN YOUTH RECRUITMENT: FORGET RESPECTING OLD PEOPLE — YOU ARE GODS, GENIUSES & WALKING SUPERPOWERS!

Posted by iusbvision on March 9, 2011

Via The Blaze.

Folks, this is Hitler Youtharian. That is not a term I use lightly as I oppose frivolous comparisons to WWII.

After you watch the Van Jones video, compare that with the message from “Der Morgige Tag Ist Mein” (Tomorrow Belongs to Me)  – English version  LINK.

Creeped out yet?

What Jones is doing  goes beyond what far left groups were pushing in schools shortly after Obama was elected such as this:

It starts out with a Cuban indoctrination song but then something happens….

and this….

There has also been concern about school teachers doing things like taking songs about Jesus and replacing Jesus with Obama and teaching the kids to sing them in public schools and other outrageous acts of propaganda as has been done HEREHERE,HEREHEREHERE and HERE. [Note: YouTube has pulled most of the video’s down].

Journalism Students: This is what not to do to someone and hope to keep your credibility.

Today this picture appeared on the Drudge Report:

This of course is Charlie Sheen. Wow he looks satanic or something doesn’t he? The photo has a nasty narrative all its own doesn’t it?

Now let me tell you just how one gets such a photo. Take a film of yourself giving a short speech with some animation or telling a short story. Now go through it frame by frame. You are going to find frames that make you look like a complete dork. You will find the strangest looks on your face while in mid word or gesture.

The New York Times and a few others use this technique frequently. When I was writing for The Preface I ran a photo essay constructed of political snapshots collected in the weeks before an election from a biased elite media newspaper. The pictures of Republicans were largely like what you see above. The pictures of Democrats looked prepared and great. If you want to be taken seriously, don’t participate in this kind of nonsense.

Journalism Students: It is easy to smear someone just by being careless.

Posted by iusbvision on March 9, 2011

This video is a great teaching aid for journalism students.

The South Bend Tribune once snapped a picture of a strip joint just to have a file picture. In the picture were two people walking on the sidewalk innocently. The picture implied,  not with intent, but with carelessness, that the two ladies were going to the strip club. The ladies got upset and the Tribune, to their credit, made it right with them.

In this case, Fox News did a similar thing. Watch the video and before you read below see if you can spot what their producer who put this clip together did wrong.

At the 45 second mark Fox shows several clips of people on YouTube asking people to donate. Notice the word “scam” is under the clips. One of the clips belonged to the man below. His full clip can be seen HERE. His link went to the United Nations World Food Program at http://www.wfp.org/ which is legit.

One can honestly say that Fox News painted him in the light of a scam artist, a criminal. It is doubtful that they had intent and the language they used in talking about it does mitigate any claim of intent. What likely happened here is that a producer or an intern  just did a search on YouTube for “donate Haiti” and pasted in the first three clips he could find.

As a result this man was made to suffer. Needless to say he was very upset and he is right to be upset.

Now before the campus crazies go all nuts trashing Fox News it is important to remember that unintentional smears like this are not uncommon. In fact every news organization who has been in business for a while can likely point to such a gaffe they have made. This is why journalism text books usually point this kind of mistake out. If you do make this kind of mistake apologize and run a visible retraction ASAP.

As a journalist, you are going to screw up sometimes. When you do just apologize and make it right. No one expects you to be a saint, they just expect you to make a best effort to be fair.

Too many journalists like to smear. An example is this story that came out accusing Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh of secretly hiring actors to call in. FM “Morning Zoo” shows often use a service to have an actor call in with a crazy story everyone can laugh at.  Anyone who has worked in radio knows this. So a reporter decided to take this known service and accuse them of calling political news/talk shows with no evidence whatsoever. Said reporter never even called the company who has the service for comment, nor did the reporter call Limbaugh or Hannity to even ask the question. Instead the reporter just made the allegation.

The story gets worse, the story is from Columbia Journalism Review (CJR), allegedly from the finest teaching journalism professors in the country;  journalism teachers who cannot follow the basic ethics rules found in any j-school textbook. CJR is partially funded by George Soros.

While this may make your editor’s day in a highly ideological news room, as most are, be careful. If a reporter ever pulled a stunt like that on one of my clients I would have that reporters face on 100 blogs,  make them the butt of jokes and make their dishonesty a viral blog story. Many publicists and press secretaries make a list of what reporters are honest and who is not. If you aren’t you will find that people will stop talking to you.

Politico.com is finding this out the hard way. Lately the quality of the journalism there has been going down and it has become more tabloid/smear like Slate.  People on the inside have told us that Politico is aware of this problem. Now it seems that Politico’s planned first presidential debate on May 2, 2011 is not going to happen as Palin and Bachmann have both made it clear that they have no interest in helping Politico’s business model or in helping them regain their credibility. Now that Hotair.com seems to be taking a similar editorial view it appears that the debate is not going to happen, or will have so few candidates there that it will be irrelevant. You brought it on yourselves guys.

UPDATE – MSNBC lefty talker admits he used hired actors coached by Congressional Democrats as callers.

People do not listen to a show to hear callers, so callers are not that important. That is why I never took very many calls on my show.

What will CJR say now?

Obama’s Debt Commission Chair’s Speak Out! To Increase Govt Revenue We Must: Lower the tax rates to 8, 14 and 23%. Make a new lean tax code. Lower the corporate tax rate. Public sector unions over reach. Democrats not serious about budget. Republicans should push for larger cuts.

UPDATE – Worlds largest bond fund dumps U.S. Treasuries – LINK.

Great interview. All credit to Erskine Bowles, who used to be one of the nastier partisan Democrat hired guns. He has almost completely adopted a near Steve Forbes like tax agenda, because that is the best way to raise government revenue. Bowles even makes the case that Democrats need to get real on spending cuts and that Republicans aren’t pushing hard enough. I am in awe.  Bowles has even says that unions have over reached. I am sure Bowles is feeling the heat from his former colleagues.  I never thought I would see myself typing these words; Erskine Bowles has earned my respect. My hat is off to his courage.

Bowles even uses the same analogy IUSB Vision does almost verbatim from the link. The deficit in February was $232 billion (yes that is for a single month), which is substantially higher than the entire yearly deficit the last year the Republicans had fiscal control (2007).
